Mike Salazar On Tour
Mexican comedian Mike Salazar has been making people laugh ever since he was a kid entertaining his classmates in the Monterrey suburb of Santiago. Today he's a comedy star thanks largely to viral videos like his famous Zumba class sketch, which has been viewed more than 5 million times on YouTube.
Born in 1989, Salazar danced, worked as a clown, and choreographed — including organizing school groups' streets moves for parades — before launching his comedy career in 2008. When he met José Luis Zagar on Facebook, the renowned comic kindly ceded him five minutes to tell some jokes at Monterrey comedy hot spot El Unicornio Azul (Blue Unicorn), where his routines were captured on video and subsequently released to the world.
"I liked to make people laugh from a very young age," Salazar has said in an interview. "This tool cures illnesses and depressions, and it helps people forget the day's problems."
Salazar has performed on numerous television shows, including Sabadazo, Guerra de Chistes, and XE Marilé. His arduous touring schedule currently finds him at home only two days a week. Increasingly, he has performed for Mexican audiences in the United States, including dates in Houston, Dallas, and Brownsville, Texas.
As a comic, Salazar's style falls between the American stand-up style and classic Mexican film comedy. Onstage, his material includes updated variations on jokes his grandfather used to tell him, he does impressions of popular Mexican regional musicians like Espinoza Paz and Valentín Elizalde, and he delivers elaborate versions of the jokes that made him famous on YouTube.
Because he avoids vulgarity in his act, Salazar has become known as "el caballero de la comedia," or "the gentleman comedian," and his humor provides fun for the entire family. One person's tragedy may be another's comic moment, but Salazar does not believe in the comedy of cruelty. He's a man of the people who mocks everyday situations almost anyone can identify with, including social media and our friends' peculiarities.
As he observed in another interview, "my goal is that the people attending my show relax and feed their spirit with laughter."
