Miami Dolphins History
The Miami Dolphins are one of the most successful NFL teams in history. Owned by Chair of the Board & Managing General Partner Stephen M. Ross, they are the oldest continuous major-league professional sports franchise in the state of Florida. The Dolphins were founded by Joe Robbie in 1965 and began play in the American Football League as an expansion team in 1966, joining the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Since 1970, the Dolphins have the fourth-best regular-season record in the NFL and are in the top 10 among any team in the four major professional sports in North America. The team have posted at least 10 wins in 23 of its 57 seasons, made 24 playoff appearances, won 13 division titles, five AFC championships and two Super Bowls. The 1972 Dolphins are the only fully undefeated team in NFL history, finishing the year 17-0 with a victory in Super Bowl VII. The Pro Football Hall of Fame houses nine players and one coach (Don Shula) who spent the majority of their careers with the Dolphins, including greats such as Larry Csonka, Bob Griese, Dan Marino and most recently, Jason Taylor. Three Dolphins have had their jerseys retired Csonka's #39, Griese's #12 and Marino's #13. The Dolphins play home games in Miami Gardens at Hard Rock Stadium and train at Baptist Health Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida.
