Las Vegas Raiders History
The Las Vegas Raiders franchise began play in the American Football League in 1960. The Raiders hired Al Davis as head coach and general manager in 1963. Davis engineered the greatest one-year turnaround in pro football history, leading the team to a 10-4 record after the Raiders posted a 1-13 mark the year before. Davis earned AFL Coach of the Year honors. The Raiders became one of the league's top teams, winning the 1967 AFL Championship. In 1966, Davis stepped down to become AFL commissioner and was a driving force behind the AFL/NFL merger. He returned to the Raiders as managing general partner.
After the merger in 1970, the Raiders became part of the American Football Conference Western Division. From 1967-1977 the Raiders appeared in three consecutive AFL title games and six AFC championship games. The 1976 Raiders won the franchise's first Super Bowl title with a 32-14 win over Minnesota in Super Bowl XI. The 1980 Raiders became the first Wild Card playoff team to win a Super Bowl, 27-10 over Philadelphia in Super Bowl XV. After moving to Los Angeles in 1982, the 1983 Raiders defeated Washington 38-9 in Super Bowl XVIII.
After returning to Oakland in 1995, the Raiders won three straight AFC West titles from 2000-2002 and earned a berth in Super Bowl XXXVII after the 2002 season. The team returned to the playoffs in 2016 after a 14-year drought and once again in 2021.
The Raiders have produced 28 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including owner Al Davis. Raiders players, coaches and staff have earned countless annual and weekly awards over the years, and squads and individual players have set numerous league and team records throughout the decades.
