Liturgy on Tour
Self-described as "transcendental black metal," Liturgy bends the rules by combining metal, experimental, and classical music, which challenges conventional notions about what genres are. At times almost meditative, other times ferocious, nothing about Liturgy's sound is predictable.
Liturgy is the project of Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix and focuses on the desire for spiritual nirvana.
They were signed by 20 Buck Spin and released their debut album Renihilation, in May of 2009. Liturgy's second album, Aesthethica, was released by Thrill Jockey in 2011 and listed at No. 26 on Spin's Best 50 Albums of 2011. Their third studio album, The Ark Work, was released in 2015. Spin and Rolling Stone magazines named The Ark Work the No. 1 avant-garde album of that year.
H.A.Q.Q., their fourth studio album, was self-released in 2019. The title refers to "Haelegen above Quality and Quantity" and Hunt-Hendrix's Marxist and psychoanalytic vision of God.
In 2020 they released their fifth studio album, Origin of the Alimonies, under Hunt-Hendrix's label, YLYLCYN. The album was complemented with an opera that was screened in NYC, accompanied by Liturgy and an 11-piece chamber ensemble.
In an Instagram post from 2019, Hunt-Hendrix invited people to an upcoming show by saying, "Tonight Liturgy will be summoning heaven to earth as usual, and if that's a welcome contrast to you, please come by." Liturgy offers a show unlike any you've seen, and the high-octane musical contrasts will transport you to another realm. Get tickets to see Liturgy when they come to a city near you.
Liturgy Live in Concert
Liturgy, based in Brooklyn, New York, began as the solo passion project of Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix while she was studying philosophy and classical composition at Columbia University in New York City. In 2008 Liturgy expanded to include additional band members and, as of 2022, consists of Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix (vocals, guitars, electronics), Mario Miron (guitar), Tia Vincent-Clark (bass guitar), and Leo Didkovsky (drums).
Hunt-Hendrix says her early musical influences include Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Igor Stravinsky, the famous Russian composer and conductor, and Steve Reich, an American composer.
Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix, formerly known as Hunter, came out as transgender in a May 2020 post on Instagram, saying, "I am a woman. I've always been one. The love I have to give is a woman's love, if only because it is mine." She goes on to say she could have done this before starting Liturgy but didn't out of fear.
