Audiences have loved Arijit Singh's soulful voice even before they knew his name. Now that Singh has gone from being a skilled playback performer in the Bollywood film world to a star in his own right, there's no overlooking the remarkable talent of the most streamed musical artist in India.
In the six years since the former contestant on Fame Gurukul experienced his breakthrough with "Tum Hi Ho" from Aashiqui 2 (a No. 1 hit on MTV India for seven weeks, Singh has worked with the biggest talents in India and won more than 50 major awards.
Singh's 12-city tour, the largest such tour for any Indian artist in North America, marks another extraordinary achievement for the 31-year-old singer and musician. Singh leads a group of more than 50 musicians from 12 different countries. Performances include such recent hits as "Binte Dil" and "Subah Subah" along with many more of the songs that have racked up hundreds of millions of streams and views and made Singh one of India's most popular musical artists.
Arijit Singh Background
Born in 1987 in West Bengal, Arijit Singh was raised in a Punjabi/Bengali family that encouraged the boy's burgeoning musical interests. His early studies in tabla and Indian classical music led to him winning a scholarship to study singing at the age of 9. While still a teenager, he first made an impression to wider audiences as a contestant on the reality show Fame Gurukul.
That also brought him to the attention of music programmers, producers, and composers in India's film and music industries. They helped Singh develop his skills as a programmer and producer himself, and then as an increasingly in-demand playback performer for some of Bollywood's biggest films and stars.
Singh's performance of "Tum Hi Ho" in Aashiqui 2 in 2013 led to a string of hits and awards. In his collaborations with such musical powerhouses as Sajid-Wajid, A.R. Rahman, and Salim-Sulaiman, Singh has wowed listeners with his rich baritone and remarkable versatility on songs that range in style from dance songs to romantic duets.
After his initial success with songs in Hindi and Bengali, he has performed in many more languages. With songs attracting hundreds of millions of views and streams on YouTube and other platforms, Singh has become India's most streamed musical artist.
